Old Fort caught Helene two ways: water on the Catawba River and slides on the I-40 cuts. The interstate is open again. Private lots aren’t finished. New private-property pickup applications stopped on April 15, 2025, and leftover trees are an owner bill (Buncombe County debris management, the regional closeout we can cite). McDowell never posted a matching parcel tally.
From Asheville the gap run is about 28 minutes, past Black Mountain, if I-40 is moving. We time the haul to that.
Catawba floor, I-40 cuts, NC 80
Downtown and the US 70 bench along the Catawba are where a dump truck wants to live. Flatter, turnaround room, dirt a blade can move. Step off that bench onto an I-40 hillside or an NC 80 hollow and you’re in thin soil over weathered rock. Debris flows like 25 to 40 degree slopes with less than 36 inches of soil in a 5-inch rain (NC Geological Survey landslides). That’s the cut pattern, not the town street.
Andrews Geyser looks gentle on a map. The old railroad grade is narrow in person. We look at it on foot. A trailer that can’t fit is a day you should not buy.
NC 80 is the other limiter. It’s the climb toward the high country, and a lot of Helene slide work sat on those hollows. A US 70 lot by the Catawba can cycle a dump truck without a spotter. An NC 80 drive often can’t. We price the access before we price the stems.
What the work actually is here
Private storm cleanup and debris removal is the common call. Public piles along I-40 are someone else’s problem. The oak in the yard is yours. We chip what we can and haul the rest.
A slide scar isn’t a chipper job by itself. Landslide damage, clearing, and stabilizing is the longer read before anyone puts a house back on the same print. Failed toes, rebuild pads, and drives that folded off NC 80 or US 70 are grading-contractor scope: cover, a cut pad, and crown, ditching, and 15 to 48 inch NCDOT-spec culverts before a builder will stage lumber (grading permits in WNC). We clear the wood ahead of that crew. Wooded tracts that never flooded still need land clearing or forestry mulching for a new envelope. Chips left on a hill beat a bare dozer cut.
Downed timber and storm cleanup is the salvage-versus-fuel note. Helene wood is a property ticket.
McDowell and the state acre line
Henderson tightens erosion at half an acre. Asheville tightens it at 10,000 square feet. McDowell doesn’t, in our inventory. The Sedimentation Pollution Control Act still does: one acre or more of disturbance, plan on file 30 days before you start (NC DEQ erosion rules). Forestry BMPs and ordinary farming stay exempt. Under an acre you still fence silt and cover dirt.
A grading phase has 21 days to get ground cover on (NC DEQ seeding specs). Grading contractors hydroseed steep cuts because that’s what sticks. Full closeout can take 15 to 90 days by watershed.
Designated trout water, if the plat shows it on the Catawba, gets a 25-foot undisturbed strip from top of bank (15A NCAC 04B .0125). Tie-ins to I-40, US 70, or NC 80 need an NCDOT driveway permit. Burn more than 5 contiguous acres of land-clearing debris and you need the special NC Forest Service paper, which is why hillside tracts here get mulched instead (NC Forest Service open burning).
Who pays for remaining Helene wood in Old Fort?
You do, on private land. Applications for the private pickup closed April 15, 2025. We won’t stamp Buncombe’s 4,771-parcel number onto McDowell. The closeout date and the owner-paid remainder are the facts that hold (Buncombe Helene debris management). Housing repair money is still in the state system (Carolina Journal recovery reporting). It doesn’t send our mulcher.

Through the gap
