Downed timber and storm damage cleanup on mountain property after Helene

A Black Mountain lot still has a pine hung in a neighbor’s oak and a tangle of tops on the bench below the drive. The street trees came out on the right-of-way program that finished in April 2025. The hung pine did not. Two years after Helene, that tree is drier, heavier to chip, and still over the walk.

Is downed timber a wildfire risk on a mountain lot?

Drying wood is fuel. Helene’s downed timber fed the Black Cove Complex fires, about 7,700 acres in Polk and Henderson counties, in March 2025. State fire officials said in 2026 that North Carolina isn’t prepared for post-Helene wildfire conditions. The Blue Ridge Parkway is running a fuel-reduction and debris project on nearly 3,000 acres in six zones from late summer 2026 through spring 2027.

Can damaged trees be salvaged for value?

Sometimes. A logger wants length, access, and wood that isn’t shattered or full of dirt. A stem that rode a flood and filled with grit is a chipper stem. A hung tree over a roof is a hazard tree first. This page doesn’t publish a mill price or a per-ton figure. Anyone selling you a salvage check without walking the wood is guessing.

Walk with a logger and a clearing contractor on the same visit if you think there is volume. Mark what might ride a truck. Mark what will be chipped. Mark what stays as habitat if you want it. Then write the scope so a salvage delay doesn’t leave a hazard tree over the drive all winter.

How soon should Helene timber be cleared?

Hazard trees over a structure or a drive should not wait on a salvage maybe. Two years on, the wood is drier than it was in the first winter. Drier wood chips faster in some heads and burns hotter if it’s still in a fuel bed. There is no remaining public pickup date for private lots.

A full-lot log job can wait on a landing, a dry window, and a buyer. The 0 to 5 ft and 5 to 30 ft rings around the house should not. A purely private take-down usually doesn’t sit in that window. Ask before you schedule a summer cut on a funded rebuild.

Do you need extra paper to pull the trees?

Pulling stems and leaving soil isn’t the same as cutting a skid trail. North Carolina wants an erosion and sediment control plan for land-disturbing activity of 1 acre or more, filed at least 30 days before work. A landing you blade into mineral soil can be that disturbance. A chipper on the drive often isn’t.

Burning the tops on more than 5 contiguous acres needs the NC Forest Service special permit, vegetative debris only, piles 500 ft from occupied structures. Fines go up to 25,000 dollars. Chip in place and you skip that stack. Mixed wreckage in the same pile isn’t vegetative debris.

Trout waters still carry a 25 ft undisturbed buffer from the top of bank. A flood-dropped sycamore in that strip isn’t an invitation to take a drum to the bank. Hand work or a reach from outside the strip, if you take it at all.

How do you set up a Black Mountain timber day?
